GOP Chair Candidate Filed to Gather Signatures

Under a proposed amendment to the State Republican Party Constitution, prominent Republican elected officials like Senator John Curtis, Governor Spencer Cox, and Attorney General Derek Brown would all be expelled from the party for their decision to gather signatures.

As part of that same proposed amendment, Phil Lyman would also be expelled from the state party for filing his intent to seek office by both the convention and signature-gathering path. On the date of his campaign filing in January 2024, Lyman confirmed his decision to gather signatures in order to prevent "upheavals to our election system."

The proposed change to the party constitution would revoke party membership for one year for any candidate who chooses to gather signatures to appear on the ballot. As someone who filed as a signature gathering candidate, Lyman would also be expelled from the party for one year from the time of the assessed penalty. The proposed amendment does not contemplate a candidate like Lyman who began collecting signatures but did not turn in enough signatures to qualify for the ballot.
